How to Choose a PI Heater: Voltage, Wattage, Size and Temperature
How to Choose a PI Heater depends mainly on the required heating area, voltage, wattage, working temperature and installation method. Confirming these parameters before ordering helps prevent overheating, insufficient heating and installation problems. This guide covers the key specifications for selecting a standard or custom polyimide flexible heater.
1. Determine PI Heater Size and Shape
Start by measuring the actual area that needs heating. The heater should cover the required heating zone without being unnecessarily oversized.
- Stock shapes: Rectangle, square and round
- Custom shapes: Ring, strip, irregular outlines, inner cut-outs and mounting holes
- Maximum custom size: 500 × 600 mm
For irregular shapes or components with openings, a drawing or dimensional sketch is recommended for accurate production.
2. Select the Working Voltage
Standard PI heaters are available in 12V DC and 24V DC, making them suitable for batteries, instruments, sensors and compact heating equipment.
For custom projects, voltage from 5V to 400V AC/DC can be specified according to the available power supply.
Always select a voltage that matches the electrical system of the equipment to avoid incorrect heater operation.
3. Select Wattage and Watt Density
Total wattage determines how much heat the heater can generate, while watt density indicates how much power is concentrated over the heating area.
- Recommended watt density: 0.1–0.6 W/cm²
- Maximum watt density: 0.8 W/cm² with adequate heat dissipation
If the required watt density is too high, increasing the heating area or reducing total power can help keep the heater within a suitable operating range.
For small precision components, a lower and more evenly distributed heat output is often preferred to avoid local overheating.
4. Confirm the Working Temperature
Temperature requirements should be confirmed before selecting the adhesive and heater construction.
- PSA adhesive version: -60°C to 180°C
- No-adhesive version: short-term operation up to 200°C
The PSA-backed version should not be continuously operated above its recommended temperature range, as excessive heat can accelerate adhesive aging and reduce mounting reliability.
5. Choose the Installation Method
The installation method depends on the heated surface, operating temperature and maintenance requirements.
- PSA pressure-sensitive adhesive: Standard option for clean, smooth surfaces and simple installation.
- No-adhesive version: Suitable when the customer uses their own bonding method or when the application requires a different mounting solution.
- Mechanical mounting: Mounting holes or other fixing features can be added for custom projects.
The standard PSA is pressure-sensitive adhesive. It is not a built-in thermal adhesive.
6. Select a Temperature Sensor
An integrated temperature sensor can simplify temperature monitoring and closed-loop control when precise heating is required.
- K-type thermocouple: Optional
- J-type thermocouple: Optional
- PT100: Not available for standard stock models; custom project required
- NTC thermistor: Not available for standard stock models; custom project required
If a sensor is required, specify the sensor type and preferred position when requesting a quotation.
7. Confirm Lead Wire Requirements
The standard lead configuration uses PTFE high-temperature wire with a 300 mm lead length and axial side exit.
- Wire: PTFE high-temperature wire
- Wire gauge: AWG24
- Standard lead length: 300 mm
- Lead exit: Axial side exit
- Custom options: Lead length, exit position and connectors
- Connectors: JST, Molex and other connectors available for custom orders
