What Is a PI Heater? Working Principle, Benefits and Applications
PI heater, also known as a polyimide heater, is an ultra-thin heating element designed to provide fast and uniform heating on flat or curved surfaces. It typically uses an etched Ni-Cr foil circuit laminated between layers of polyimide film, creating a lightweight and flexible heating element for space-constrained applications.
PI heaters can be supplied with pressure-sensitive adhesive (PSA) backing for direct installation or without adhesive for applications requiring a different mounting method. Custom shapes, dimensions, voltage, wattage, lead configuration, and temperature-sensing options are available for specific heating requirements. For product specifications and custom configurations, see our PI heater product page.
How Does a PI Heater Work?
A PI heater works through electrical resistance heating. When current passes through the etched nickel-chromium foil circuit, electrical energy is converted into heat across the designed heating area.
The polyimide film provides electrical insulation while maintaining a thin profile and allowing efficient heat transfer to the target surface. Temperature sensors such as RTDs or thermocouples can also be integrated when temperature monitoring or closed-loop control is required.
Why Choose a Polyimide Heater?
- Ultra-thin construction: The thin film structure allows heating elements to fit into assemblies with limited installation space.
- Flexible installation: The heater can be designed for flat, curved, or irregular mounting surfaces within the applicable bending requirements.
- Fast thermal response: Low thermal mass supports rapid heat-up and temperature response.
- Uniform heating: Etched-foil circuit patterns provide controlled heat distribution across the designed heating area.
- Easy installation: Optional PSA backing allows the heater to be bonded to compatible surfaces.
- Custom design: Shapes, dimensions, cut-outs, mounting holes, voltage, and wattage can be customized for specific applications.
- Temperature sensing: NTC, PT100, PT1000, and selected thermocouple options can be integrated for temperature monitoring and control.
Typical Applications
Because of its thin profile, low thermal mass, and flexible construction, a polyimide heater is suitable for applications where conventional heating elements may be too bulky or difficult to integrate.
- 3D-printer hot-bed plate heating
- Lithium-ion battery pack pre-heating
- PCB and LCD module temperature maintenance
- Optical lens and optical component heating
- Sensor anti-condensation heating
- Medical analyzer and reagent cell heating
- Instrument and cabinet internal component heating
- Small laboratory test plate heating
- Camera module low-temperature pre-heating
Common PI Heater Configurations
Polyimide heaters can be designed in different shapes and configurations according to the available installation space and required heating area. Common designs include rectangular, square, round, ring-shaped, strip, and irregular geometries.
Custom designs can incorporate inner holes, cut-outs, mounting holes, special lead positions, and other features required for mechanical integration. PSA or non-adhesive constructions can also be selected according to the installation method.
Voltage, wattage, heating area, lead-wire configuration, and temperature-sensing options can be customized for the intended application. For detailed specifications and available configurations, see our PI heater product solutions.
Typical PI Heater Specifications
PI heater specifications vary according to the heater size, circuit design, installation method, and application requirements. Typical configurations may include the following:
| Item | Typical Configuration |
|---|---|
| Heating Element | Etched NiCr alloy circuit |
| Insulation Material | Polyimide film |
| Construction | Flexible film heater with optional PSA backing |
| Shape | Rectangular, square, round, strip, ring, or custom |
| Temperature Sensor | NTC / PT100 / PT1000 / K-type / J-type thermocouple |
| Lead Wire | PTFE / Silicone / Custom |
Actual thickness, voltage, wattage, operating temperature, and other electrical or mechanical specifications depend on the selected heater design. Refer to the PI heater product page for current product specifications.
PI Heater vs Other Flexible Heating Solutions
A polyimide heater is particularly useful when an application requires a thin, lightweight, and flexible heating element with low thermal mass. For applications requiring a thicker and more mechanically robust flexible heater, a silicone rubber heater may be more suitable.
For cylindrical insertion heating rather than surface heating, a cartridge heater may be more appropriate.
The most suitable heater depends on the installation method, available space, required temperature, heating area, and control requirements.
How to Choose a PI Heater
When selecting a PI heater, consider the available installation area, required heating surface, operating voltage, target wattage, working temperature, mounting method, and temperature-control requirements.
- Heating area: Define the surface that requires heating and any areas that need to remain free for mounting or components.
- Voltage and wattage: Select the electrical requirements according to the available power supply and required heating performance.
- Installation method: Choose PSA backing or a non-adhesive construction according to the mounting surface and application.
- Temperature control: Consider an integrated NTC, RTD, or thermocouple when temperature monitoring or closed-loop control is required.
- Shape and dimensions: Custom outlines, holes, cut-outs, and lead positions can be designed to match the equipment.
